An excellent release from the renowned Japanese distillery, owned by Nikka. It was distilled in February 1991 and bottled in July 2014 at 62 ABV. Quite mild on the nose, the whisky doesn’t stretch too far from Yoichi’s lightly peated roots as it perks up classic notes of coal fires and mushroom and, yes, perhaps just a. In addition to single malt production, the Miyagikyo Distillery has a large Coffey column still used to make grain whisky for blending, as well as gin and vodka. Nikka Discovery Yoichi Single Malt Aromatic Yeast 2022 Made with a yeast that is intended to evoke notes of ginjo style sake, aged in a variety of cask types. This no-age-statement version was released in 2016 as a permanent product that truly captures the authentic style of Yoichi malts, when all age-statements. Nikka owns and operates two distilleries: Yoichi Distillery on the island of Hokkaido, and the Miyagikyo Distillery in Sendai. After working a ten year contract with Suntory, he left to build the Yoichi Distillery in 1934. Taketsuru was sent to Scotland in 1918 to learn about single malt production, and spent his time interning at the Hazelburn Distillery in Campbeltown. WHAT: Nikka was founded in 1940 by Masataka Taketsuru, after having overseen construction of Japan’s first whisky distillery: Yamazaki. The Yoichi malts are lightly peated and have a salinity to them that nods to Islay and the island malts of Scotland.
